“Parents’ use of mobile devices harms family life,” high school students say

15.11.2017

According to a survey of high school students, excessive use of gadgets by parents disrupts family life. Adults who constantly check their mobile phones sometimes ignore children, thus upsetting them.

Of the 2,000 children surveyed, aged 11 to 18, more than a third said they had asked their parents to stop checking their mobile spree.

And 14% of children claimed that their parents went online even while eating. Although of the 3,000 parents surveyed, 95% denied the observation.

The research was carried out by Digital Awareness UK and Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conferenc.

Among the students:
– 82% said that during meals should be free of devices;
– 22% said that mobile devices disrupted communication in their family. Now communication does not give pleasure and happens much less often;
– 36% asked their parents to put their phones aside.

Of the students who asked their parents to put their mobiles aside, 46% said that adults did not take note of the remark, and 46% were ignored with this request, which is very upset.

Despite this, just 10% of adults surveyed believe that their gadgets are a problem for children, although almost half (43%) believe that their gadgets are a problem for children, although almost half (43%) of adults surveyed believe that their gadgets are a problem for children, although almost half (43%) of adults surveyed believe that their gadgets are a problem for children. admitted that they spend quite a lot of time online:
– 37% of them are online for three to five hours on weekends;
– 5% spend up to 15 hours on weekends.

A study last year by DAUK and HMC shows that nearly half of high school students check their phones before going to bed, despite feeling tired and unable to concentrate in the morning on the way to school.

Similarly, according to recent research, almost three-quarters of students, namely 72%, are online from 3 to 10 hours a day, but for 11% of respondents this number can grow up to 15 hours a day on weekends and holidays, and 3% said that it can stretch up to 20 hours every day.

Most of all in such a strong dependence on gadgets schoolchildren are concerned about the lack of healthy and full sleep, 47% even highlight this as a major and very serious problem.
But among adults, only 10% are concerned about the amount of time their children spend on the Internet every day at the expense of night sleep.

Mike Buchan, headteacher at Ashford School in Kent and chairman of HMC, which represents the UK’s leading private schools, said it was time for parents, pupils and teachers to “rewrite the guidance” for mobile devices that “became life is an integral part of life at school, at work and during entertainment.”

“Our survey demonstrates that children are well aware of the risks associated with overuse of modern technology, but they need the help of adults to set clear boundaries in the use of devices and to have an exemplary pattern of behavior for imitation in this matter. To achieve this, we need to join forces at school and at home and give consistent advice,” Buchan says.

“The Wake Call”
Emma Robertson, co-founder of DAUK, says that very few parents know how much time their children spend online, especially at night. And also what they actually do on the Internet.

“We hope these studies will be a wake-up call for families and force parents to have serious conversations at home about the safe and healthy use of modern technology,” she says.

The research was conducted before the HMC Spring Conference, which explores new ways schools and families interact, both in the public and private sectors.

Earlier this month, the study involved parents and students from one of the leading academic networks that run both public and private schools in England.
