The appearance of students in the UK affects performance

20.12.2019

Beautiful school uniform, neat hairstyles, classical demeanors – this is what characterizes the student of the English private school from his outside. For many, the image of young ladies and gentlemen from iconic schools such as Eaton College or StPaul’s Girls School has become a magnet for attracting people to secondary education in the UK. Is it important or most importantly not a visual form, but only content?

“i class” fa-info-circle fa-3x fa-pull-left fa-border” aria-hidden””British sociologists, together with colleagues from America, have done a serious scientific work to answer the question: “How does the appearance of children affect academic success?” For the most impatient we give an answer at once – well-looking, neat, well-groomed children are ahead in the performance of their classmates for almost six months! At the same time, for such a handicap it was enough to be only one point higher on the scale of “attractiveness” relative to others, with all other equal qualities and conditions.

This discovery came as a big surprise, as previous studies in UK private schools have shown that seemingly important factors such as teacher level and programme effectiveness affect pupils’ attainment, within the statistical margin of error.

The study looked at the academic successes of 1,300 American children between the ages of 6 months and 15 years and 17,000 Britons born in the same week in the mid-twentieth century. So a representative sample is very credible.

The beauty and attractiveness of things are very subjective. However, scientists managed to measure them as they did. In the U.S. part of the study, a focus group of 10 people showed snippets of video interviews of children, based on impressions, it was necessary to put a five-point scale on the rating of appearance from “not” to “very attractive”.

In the English part, the assessment was given by teachers who had to distribute all in four groups: attractive, not attractive, having flaws, sleazy.
Success in the study of those who on the scale of attractiveness took the top positions were above average. They did better with the tests and the average score in all subjects was higher, even though samples were made based on gender, race and family security. Admission to a university in the UK or college in America among “good-looking” children is more likely, according to the study.

Scientists tried to dig deeper and find out exactly how the daily life of the student reflects his appearance. It turned out that teachers are more willing to pay attention to sympathetic students, and sleazy schoolchildren are more likely to be ridiculed by classmates and less socially successful. Naturally, this has a detrimental effect on academic performance.

Similar conclusions have previously been made on the basis of the study of the attractiveness of adults. That confirms the general pattern. More attractive people earn more than their peers, and the reason for this lies precisely at the stage of education.

In other words, those who look good in school years have a higher chance of economic success in the future. And although in life appearance is not a decisive factor and spending more time in front of the mirror get ridicule from others, but “beauties” seem to get a great return on life.

When we accompany prospective students and their parents to private English schools before deciding where to apply, you can often hear a comment on exactly what students look like and how they behave, and the grade of classrooms, dormitories and school infrastructure is already in second place.
When it comes to children’s studies in England, there can be no small things. “https://www.mercury-education.com/contacts/”ask your questions through a feedback form or call.
